GRAHAM BALMFORTH

Specialist Areas:
- Clinical and Professional Negligence

After a career within the Royal Horse Artillery and latterly the Military Intelligence Corps Graham read Law and Finance at University. He qualified as a Barrister in 1998 and following a brief period of independent advocacy in and around London he joined a specialist firm in his home county of Yorkshire. Graham has worked on a varied caseload of clinical negligence and personal injury matters recovering many millions of pounds in compensation for his clients. He moved to Applebys in 2008 and now shares overall supervision of the firm with the Principal Solicitor.

Graham has been responsible for the introduction of computerised case management software across the firm and has streamlined and re-orientated the claims process in order to bring about a smoother and speedier claims journey for all of Applebys' clients. Speaking of this customer focused culture that Appleby’ promote amongst its staff Graham has commented:

"We do not accept Defence work; we are a fiercely independent modern Yorkshire law firm and we place our clients' needs beyond all others. If Defendants do not act quickly to settle claims then they must face the Courts and explain their behaviour, we do not believe that huge multi billion pound insurance conglomerates deserve second and third chances to treat our clients fairly"

Mr Balmforth is a Senior Associate member of the Royal Society of Medicine and sits on the IBA international committees on Medical Law and Professional Ethics. He is a practitioner member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and is a member of the clinical negligence specialist interest group. He is married and spends his spare time in field sports and travelling in central and eastern Europe.
